TheSoundtrack to My Life No 1: A Place in the Sun

For the last few months I've been going through my iTunes collections alphabetically because left to me I will listen to the same thing day in day out. And it's been fun finding albums I didn't remember I had. And it's been fun remembering the significance of the music on my life (or not).

A couple of years ago I was obsessive about listening to Desert Island Discs and would obsess about what I would play if I got to go on, it’s hard and I don’t know how the participants do it.

The other day I was listening to a Stevie Wonder greatest hits album and A Place in the Sun came on. The funny thing about this song is that I always forget it was a Stevie Wonder song because I remember it as a song my Dad used to sing around the house. Now I’m not silly enough to think it was my Dad’s hit but it was my Dad’s song.

'Cause there's a place in the sun
Where there's hope for ev'ryone
Where my poor restless heart's gotta run
There's a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Got to find me a place in the sun

Hearing it again probably only the second or third time since my Dad died was a bit of a surprise but the sadness is not of nostalgia for him.

Now I wonder what it was about the song that he loved so much. Having come over from Nigeria was that the place in the sun he was dreaming about or was that place in the sun his aspirations and ambitions. I don’t think he ever found it.

Midlife is a point where we take stock and think about what we’ve achieved and we start to judge our lives based on what we thought we would be doing, based on what we considered to be our place in the sun.

Where is your place in the sun?

Are you there yet?

Are you still on your way or have you given up?
