Day 35: Iron Out the Kinks
“Sometimes your creative energy is like water in a kinked hose, and before thought can flow on the topic at hand, you have to straighten the hose by attending to whatever is preoccupying you” Nathalie Goldberg.
I found this quote today in Michael Neill’s book A Year of Creating the Impossible. It seems to sum up what’s been going on for me these past few weeks.
What I’ve wanted to do is focus on the business of increasing visibility both on and offline but the best laid plans, as they say, often go awry and that has been the story of my recent life.
And this quote is really helpful because she’s right. Sometimes you have to give yourself the space to iron out the kinks before things can start to flow again. And sometimes it’s not just one thing. It’s the clearing out of the old to make way for the new. It’s tying up what’s outstanding in preparation for what’s coming. It’s saying goodbye, so you can say hello.
Last week I talked about my major declutter and how freer I felt and continue to feel. There’s paperwork I need to sort out like taxes. In taking care of that I now see the system I need to implement in order to make things smoother next year. Straightening that hose, I’ve found a way to put it away so it doesn’t kink.
It doesn’t mean my life is totally sorted – would that it was. There’ll be other kinks in the hose that I’ll have to straighten. The important thing is - as much as you want to get on with the juicy stuff - to allow it, give it space and attention, learn from it then try to anticipate some of these kinks and put systems into place so the hose of life and business doesn’t kink and creative energy flows like water.
What are the kinks disrupting the flow of your creative energy?
